Memory Bane

Memory Bane

We old folks worry about our memory.  That’s why I paid attention to Wall Street Journal story about zapping the brain with weak electrical currents:

The new research, conducted on people over age 65, adds to the growing evidence that noninvasive stimulation mimicking the rhythmic brain activity that supports cognition can improve memory.

Too late.  When I was in my forty years, I sometimes got excited and started calling my children by our dog’s name.

In my eighties, I had trouble telling the check-out lady who was verifying my credit card my telephone number.   And at ninety, last four numbers of my Social Security card number demanded by the check-in-nurse requires a billfold look-up.

All above tells you why I’m impressed by the retired elementary school teacher’s ability.   At our dinner table she easily recited what she remembers her mother taught her:

40 days hath September
All the rest, I don’t remember
But there’s a calendar on the wall
So why bother me at all
