This nonagenarian’s invitation to Zoom with the Barbee children came in a text message from my daughter Cynthia…
Christmas is in the air and on line! Here is the link to the Elam-Barbee Christmas Zoom. Be festive Ho-Ho-Ho
For many years, our families met for Christmas or Thanksgiving celebrations. Friendship went all the way back to when college roommates Fred and I took turns being the Best Man at our weddings. I’m the last of that four standing. I accepted via text. One Barbee son responded “I laughed.” The other Barbee son sent emojis:
All I messaged was how I would groom for my Zoom appearance. My experience grooming to go on air stretches back to 1953. When the first TV station went on air in our West Texas area, I dressed to deliver my live oil and gas reports. For two years I put on my coat and tie.
Next decade, when I became manager of the other TV station in town, I delivered our editorials and the Ask the Manager segments. I wore coat and tie.
Maybe these Barbee nephews only knew how to dress when they worked on a couple of weekly newspapers and a small-town radio station. But we who have on-air experience know proper grooming needed.
What’s funny about my acceptance? I answered, “For my zoom appearance I will put in my dentures.”
